Exploring the EMMETT Technique

A safe, simple to apply, light touch body therapy, the EMMETT Technique is gentle and easy both on the body of the practitioner and the client. Using light pressure, the technique works on unique points within the muscles and muscle groups, triggering a relaxation response in the soft tissues of the body, resulting in the feeling of improved comfort and wellbeing. These unique points are present all over the body and therefore the therapist can target the area of concern.
The founder of the technique, Australian, Ross Emmett mapped these micro points in the body and taught his students how to find them easily and simply, allowing us all to achieve the results he was getting in his Queensland clinic.
Ross Emmett taught his first course here in the UK in 2007, and I was privileged to be a student on this first course. I must say that, 15 years later, this technique still has the power to amaze me.
Re-balancing the body
Any area of the body can benefit from a release in muscle and soft tissue tension. Importantly the main focus for the practise is to help re-balance the body as a whole, helping the client feel more grounded, settled, stable and comfortable. Much of this work involves re-balancing the deep core muscle called Psoas and this is done so simply it feels, to many, like magic!
Other therapy techniques tend to use heavy pressure and strong stretches for this vital muscle; but with EMMETT we can influence and change it in less than a minute.
Relaxation
It is also true in these difficult times that we are more involved in helping clients deal with stress and anxiety. Relaxation of the whole body is possible using this beautiful light touch technique – often to the point where people fall asleep on the couch. Clients are often surprised that they feel beautifully sleepy during a treatment, even when not aimed at relaxation.
It is not unknown to hear gentle snoring during a knee or sinus treatment!
Targeted muscle and soft tissue release
The EMMETT technique is very much a bespoke therapy – there are very few “routines” or “recipes” to treat a particular area. When we have someone come in for a shoulder issue, it could be any number of structures that need releasing and so, every shoulder issue can be different from the last. Line us up 20 people with a shoulder problem and we will probably treat them all differently. This challenges the therapist and the client to work together in partnership, identifying issues and working on solutions together. The logo of the technique is a Chameleon and this is because we will change and vary the session depending on the needs of each individual.
Questions you may have
Who?
The EMMETT Technique is suitable for pregnant women, new born babies, active children, teenagers, adults, the not-so active client with chronic issues, and also in palliative and end-of life care.
The gentle nature of the technique makes it suitable for all.
If you are not sure about whether it would suit you. our advice is to experience it and then decide.
How many sessions?
Often it is possible to make a change in the first session but it may be beneficial to have a follow-up treatment session to re-enforce that first treatment. The need for more sessions depends on the presenting issue(s).
Many clients choose to schedule maintenance sessions, especially if they work in physically or psychologically challenging occupations. Also those clients with chronic conditions feel it beneficial to come for an EMMETT session on a regular basis to maintain their comfort levels.
People’s awareness of their needs has been heightened over the past couple of years and we often see that people are taking more responsibility for their health and wellbeing. Being EMMETT Practitioners allows us to help people get to know the level of comfort that is possible for their bodies and also to realise if and when they need more help.
How?
Carried out sitting, standing or lying down; on skin or through clothing; the EMMETT relaxation response is usually immediate.
We have stories of EMMETT being offered to people who may be struggling to be comfortable on long flights; in the baggage hall of the airport; at poolside; on the sports field in the middle of a game of rugby; in the supermarket, in the workplace … the list is endless. I treated a security dog handler and a cloakroom attendant at a recent large event in London when I went to collect my bag! Quickly and simply giving more comfort to a shoulder and a knee!
The beauty of EMMETT is that we only need our fingers to give a treatment and we have those with us …. always!
Training in the EMMETT Technique

Professional training is available to treat people, horses and dogs across the UK & Ireland as well as in 40 countries around the world.
If professional training to become a therapist is not on your current agenda, you may want to join an Introductory Course to further explore what EMMETT can do for you and your family. You may want to host a course for an interested group in your particular setting.
It is also an ideal therapy to add to a therapist’s existing skills. We have the full range of complementary therapists who have trained, as well as a growing number of medical and exercise practitioners. Being able to add a quick and simple correction in the middle of another treatment can add so much value for the client, and it can also take the strain out of performing the heavier duty therapies. We also have people who are trained in the “talking therapies” who will often add a physical correction to allow the client to feel more relaxed and in less discomfort during a talking session.
The way the training is structured also means that we are happy to accept students with no prior training in therapy or any other body related modalities. We have a number of very successful practitioners who have come from non medical / non-therapy backgrounds.
